Poetry Slam

He started as a hip-hop MC over thirty years ago in New York City Now Bruce George is a Peabody and Tony award winning co-founder of HBO s Def Poetry Jam He says he developed a love affair with words at a young age thanks to his mother He says that led him to performance poetry George is at the University of Mary this week He s leading a creative writing workshop giving a talk about art and politics and finishing with a Poetry Slam Wednesday at Heskett Hall George describes how it works Bruce George Your gonna have these poets competing against each other And the winner will get bragging rights and that sense of satisfaction that he or she was on stage and had the opportunity to express him or herself It s clean fun knowledgeable and entertaining George s talk on Art and Politics takes place tomorrow at 3pm in Butler Hall at The University of Mary Then Wednesday the Poetry Slam takes place at 7pm at Heskett Hall The competition is open to U-Mary students but both events are free and open to the public
